9NEWS reporter Gregg Moss updates on the tear in DIA’s tent canopy. 9 a.m. March 19, 2003.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, the mayor and directors of the airport said DIA would stay closed at least through midnight. They said snow has not only covered all the runways, but also the lights leading to the runways and the antennae that send radio signals to incoming pilots.
While the airport might be able to reopen by midnight, planes aren’t likely to be able to start taking off with passengers until Thursday at noon at the earliest.
Once flights resume, the designers of the airports tent-style roof will be able to fly in from New York. They are coming to examine a tear that appeared Wednesday morning in one section of the canopy. The discovery forced an evacuation of the main terminal area. It will remain closed off until the roof’s designers can get a closer look. The massive weight of snow is believed to have caused the tear. It happened in an exterior section of the canopy that was designed to last 20 years. 作者:

The fabric roof of this project has a length of 1000 ft. (305 m) and an average width of 240 ft. (73m). While some of the earlier fabric structures are much larger, this is the most significant application. It is a fully enclosed building of great public importance with a continuous 24 hour use.
Two rows of columns, spaced 150 ft.(46 m) apart, form the interior supports. Triangular clerestory windows and huge glass endwalls, also cable supported, surround the space in a configuration not unlike the medieval cathedrals. The fabric sweeps over the glass enclosures to connect to its exterior anchorages and shade and protect the building.
A continuous inner fabric liner, independently supported, provides insulation, sound control, and protection against condensation. Separate exterior canopies on both ramps extend the full 1000 ft. of the building. Together with the main roof and the cable supported glass walls this building shows the most extensive application of tensile architecture.
Cost of tensile structures: $ 35 million.
Completion: May 1994.
