Most of the time, structural stability is not relying on the membrane. The structure (non-membrane portion) should be able to support itself and resist external loadings without membrane.
Cables are normally used to support membrane either in surface (Ridge or Valley) or on edges (Catenaries).
Cable usually curved and thus its length is longer than the straight distance between the 2 connecting points. Safety cables are then used in this circumstance to make sure the non-membrane portion will not tip over if the membrane does not exist.
